Introducing the Diversity of Indonesian Coffee

In collaboration with Bank Indonesia (BI), the Coffee Development & Education Foundation (KAPPI) participated in the Indonesia Pavilion at the Specialty Coffee Association of Japan (SCAJ) 2026, held from October 14 to 16, 2026, at Tokyo Big Sight in Tokyo, Japan. KAPPI presented a diverse selection of Indonesian coffees, including Aceh Gayo, Mandheling, Java, Bali, Kalosi Toraja, and civet coffee. Visitors were also invited to explore the distinctive characteristics of each coffee through sensory experiences, from smelling the aromas to tasting the brews.

Discovering New Flavours in Every Cup

Visitors familiar with Mandheling and Toraja coffee were encouraged to discover other origins, such as Aceh Gayo and Java, each offering its own distinctive flavour profile. One visitor, for example, was surprised to discover that a Robusta coffee could offer flavour characteristics reminiscent of Arabica. This experience demonstrated how Indonesia’s coffee diversity can challenge expectations and offer new perspectives to international coffee enthusiasts.

Beyond introducing different coffee origins, KAPPI collaborated with BI to promote Indonesian coffee products from micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to international audiences through a curation process. Selected coffee beans sourced from farmers supported by BI were also presented to visitors at SCAJ 2026. This initiative highlighted the distinctive characteristics and quality of Indonesian coffee while creating opportunities to connect local producers with prospective buyers and international industry stakeholders. The collaboration underscored the importance of partnerships in translating the potential of Indonesian coffee farmers into broader market opportunities.

Bringing Global Recognition Back to Farmers

KAPPI’s participation at SCAJ 2026 continued its efforts to promote Indonesian coffee internationally, following previous engagements at Expo 2025 Osaka, SCAJ 2025, FOODEX JAPAN 2026, and World of Coffee Bangkok 2026. These efforts are set to continue at upcoming events, including World of Coffee 2027.

For KAPPI, these initiatives go beyond introducing Indonesian coffee to global markets, they are also about bringing that recognition back to farmers. Greater international appreciation for Indonesian coffee is expected to strengthen farmers’ pride and confidence in the quality of their harvests, encourage continued quality improvements, and contribute to the long-term development of Indonesia’s coffee industry.
