Expanding Market Access Through Indonesian Diaspora Networks
Tokyo — KAPPI strengthened the presence of Indonesian coffee in the Japanese market through a networking session involving 13 Indonesian restaurant owners in Japan. This initiative positioned diaspora restaurants as strategic partners in introducing the distinctive flavors, quality, and stories of Nusantara coffee to global consumers.
As an organization focused on developing the coffee sector, KAPPI promotes a stronger coffee ecosystem from upstream to downstream. At the production level, KAPPI supports capacity building for coffee stakeholders through education, improved cultivation practices, and enhanced post-harvest quality.
These efforts were further expanded through Indonesia’s culinary diaspora network in Japan. Indonesian restaurants were viewed as effective channels for introducing Indonesian coffee directly to international consumers while also building stronger narratives around the origins, craftsmanship, and quality of Indonesian coffee products.
Education as a Key Driver in Promoting Indonesian Coffee in Japan
As part of this initiative, KAPPI conducted educational sessions for restaurant owners on coffee production processes and the unique characteristics of Indonesian coffee. This approach aimed to improve downstream stakeholders’ understanding so they could present and promote Indonesian coffee more accurately and consistently to consumers in the Japanese market.
The program aligns with KAPPI’s commitment to capacity building, not only for farmers but also for downstream actors who play an important role in expanding international market access for Indonesian coffee.
KAPPI believes that strengthening understanding at the downstream level could build a stronger narrative around Indonesian coffee, positioning it not merely as a commodity but as a product with significant cultural, social, and economic value.
